TV Screen Flickering: Simple Causes vs Real Faults

Screen flicker has two families of causes: external (loose HDMI cable, set-top box, unstable power — fixable yourself in minutes) and internal (backlight driver, T-Con board, panel ribbon — needs a technician). The pattern of the flicker tells you which family you are in.

Rule out the free fixes first

Re-seat both ends of the HDMI/AV cable, try a different HDMI port, and try a different source (play the TV's own menu or a USB file). If the flicker disappears on the internal menu, the TV is fine — the cable or set-top box is the culprit. Also try another wall socket; unstable supply causes rhythmic flickering.

Flicker on all sources: what is failing?

If the menu itself flickers, the fault is internal. Rapid brightness pulsing points to the backlight driver; intermittent horizontal bands or a shimmering image point to the T-Con board or a loosening panel ribbon connector. These are precise, board-level repairs — typical range ₹1,500 – ₹4,500, confirmed after inspection.

Does flickering damage the TV further?

A failing backlight driver can stress the LED strips over time, and a loose ribbon can degrade contact points, so it is worth repairing early rather than waiting for the screen to go fully dark — at which point the repair may also need backlight strip replacement.

Flickering only on one app or channel?
