TV Backlight Repair: Symptoms, Process and What It Costs

The backlight is the row of LED strips that illuminates your TV's picture. When strips or individual LEDs fail you see a dark or dim screen, dark horizontal bands, bright round spots, or a picture only visible under a flashlight. Repair means replacing the LED strips — one of the most common and most affordable major TV repairs.

The tell-tale symptoms

Bright round spots scattered on the picture = LED lenses have fallen or strips are burning. One dark horizontal band = one failed strip. Completely dark screen with working sound = full backlight failure (confirm with the flashlight test). Screen noticeably dimmer than before = strips aging or driver limiting current.

What the repair involves

The TV is opened face-down on a padded surface, the panel is carefully lifted, the diffuser sheets are removed, and the LED strips beneath are replaced — ideally as a full set, because when one strip fails the others are usually close behind. The set is then reassembled and burn-tested.

Typical cost and time

Full backlight strip replacement typically costs ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 for 32"–43" TVs and ₹3,000 – ₹7,000 for 50"–55", depending on model and strip availability — exact quote after inspection. Time: 1–2 hours when strips for your model are in stock; the work is regularly done at customers' homes.

Make the new backlight last

Heat kills LEDs. Two free habits double backlight life: don't run brightness/backlight at 100% (75–85% looks nearly identical and runs far cooler), and leave ventilation space behind the TV. We set this up after every backlight job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Turn the TV on in a dark room and shine a phone torch close to the screen. If you can faintly see the picture under the torch, the backlight has failed while the rest of the TV works — a repairable fault.

All of them. Strips age together — replacing only the failed one usually means another visit within months. A full set costs only moderately more and carries the work through years.
